Managing Information

Security — of person, home, nation, and most of all, information — is going to be the issue that shapes the first decades of this millennium. I came across a web release for Symark, an information security solutions provider who offers “PowerBroker and PowerPassword-UME identity management and access control solutions,” which “combine best-of-breed functionality with ease-of-use to limit access to information and systems based on pre-defined policies and privileges.” This must be extraordinarily complicated — I can barely manage to set up a WiFi network that will work with my Macs & XP boxes — but so crucial if you are managing mission-critical information such as financial or human resource details. “Save the Server, Save the World,” I guess is the message . . . :)

Back To School

Well, after my week-long break (that was really no vacation at all), I head back to school tomorrow. Of course, I’m a prep maniac, which means I filled my gas tank this morning for the drive north. Over $50! As much as I love my school, I can’t believe how much the total expense has turned out to be. I have to find an more cost-effective solution for my education. Come June, I will have to have a more permanent living arrangement to carry me through to winter as I’ve got class four days a week during the summer and then full-time student teaching in the fall.

One way that people avoid the expense of traveling to school or having to be a resident is to attend classes online. I recently read about DirectoryofSchools.com in a web release which states that this “online education portal” represents over nine thousand online degree and professional certificate programs in over 1,355 schools.  Looking at the site, it clear they have a lot of options for just about every field, and I like that they are “committed to excellence” and strive to insure that their “partner schools are reputable” through an “in-house verification process which reviews accreditation or vocational industry standards relevant to each school.” If anyone is interested in pursuing one of the many online degrees that are available in our Information Age, Directory of Schools might be a great place to start your search.

Fun Forever

I love to StumbleUpon great sites! Whenever I’m bored or in need of some inspiration, I just click on the “Stumble” button installed in my web browser, and I’m off to look at hugely interesting artifacts that users with interests similar to mine have submitted.

Earlier, I wrote about the book art page I found through StumbleUpon, and I went back to look at the whole site, Fun Forever. It’s spare but gorgeous (check out how the background moves as you scroll, how awesome!), and offers a unique collection of cool and usual products that are just flat out neat. I love this post on what blankets say, which includes sheets that have Romeo & Juliet printed on them to sheets that will leave messages pressed into the people sleeping on them. Definitely have a peek at this site, it’s worth it!

Option Trading

As I’ve said before, I don’t invest because the wealth of choices out there terrifies me.  How do you know when you’re making a good decision?  I’m not the kind of person who could weather a substantial loss without feeling like the sky was falling.  I think this is why a recent web release by PowerOptions caught my eye.  They deal with option trading, and they claim to be the only online data provider to offer their investors access to  “SmartSearchXL®, a patented decision support technology that identifies the highest return option trades.” Decision support technology, I like that.  Sounds like it would give you confidence, like your coach telling you to “Just Do It!” or something.  PowerOptions also claims to offer “the convenience and control required to automatically sort, filter, and analyze all 3,000+ optionable stocks and 195,000+ options online to find investments to meet your profit goals.”  I like how those huge numbers are balanced against your profit goals, like “see, its a piece of cake!  I might end up taking advantage of their 14-day free trial, which comes with access to a free online User Guide and toll-free support…

Pyroteachnic

I have come to the sad conclusion that I need to change the template for my online teaching portfolio, Pyroteachnic.  While I love the flame motif and the script, I think it might be hard to read for some people and it is definitely not Section 503c compliant.  I’d planned to do two almost complete code sets to address this, but I’m never going to get around to it.  Heck, I haven’t even been able to update it since the winter, which is just hugely disappointing to me personally.  It will have to go on the AF/BSS (after finals but before summer school) list of to-dos.  So, if anyone knows of an appropriate WordPress theme that uses accessibility standards, please let me know!
