School Fundraising

The other day, when I was finally forced to clean my closet so that I would have space to cram in all the stuff from the floor so that I could reach my bed without pole-vaulting, I discovered my “Senior Women” shirt.  Mine is perfect, pristine white, but most of my classmates wrote all over each others in one of those bonding rituals I’ve never quite understood.  Yearbooks, I get, but why on earth are we buying ugly shirts no one will ever wear? Even raising money for school activities was no excuse for these monstrosities.  U-G-L-Y is definitely an understatement.

That’s why I think this is one of the best school fundraising ideas I’ve ever seen.  Flip-flops!  How cool would it be to have these in your school colors, maybe even with your graduation year cut into the sole so that you could literally “leave your mark” on the grounds of your school? Plus they’re cheap, which I always think is a bonus, and come in a range of styles.  When you figure that grad time is also near the start of summer vacation, its obvious that it would be a great way to encourage school spirit while raising funds in a practical way. Not to mention, they’d take up little closet space . . .

Junior Achievement

Just finished my third class as a Junior Achievement volunteer. This is a great program which invites professionals from the community to go into schools and teach students some of the fundamentals of business. My boyfriend scoffs at the idea of me covering such a topic, but really I think it’s going pretty well. My kids are brilliant, poliet, and engaged, which makes my job pretty easy! I’m required as part of my teaching certification process to engage in some “education for employment” fieldwork, which this counts as, but really I’m mostly happy that I finally get a chance to start volunteering again. It’s been so long since I’ve had anything but material goods & money to donate to the causes I care about. Although I had been thinking I would go on a tropical adventure with my time off in August, I think I might do a service trip instead. I will have to look into it though — since I no longer have an active affilitation with a church, it can be difficult to find the right kind of opportunity that fits with my schedule and interests . . .
