I have always loved “Different Drum” by Linda Ronstadt & The Stone Ponies — beyond all reason, that song just gets me groovin’. Must be tied inexplicably to some happy time or other in my childhood. Today, as I was whipping through the house, trying to get things clean for my aunt’s arrival, listening to my iPod, I literally almost passed out on the stairs because I was being so . . . energetic. We’re talking poses, flailing arms, best American Idol Reject vocalizations, the whole act. I’m surprised to discover that many people my age and younger don’t know this song — it really is one of the greatest “girl-power” anthems ever, and nothing beats belting it out in the shower. Perfect for telling the world “I ain’t scared to be me, even solo.” So here’s the lyrics, kiddies:
You and I
Travel to the beat
Of a different drum
Oh, can’t you tell by the way I run
Evertime you make eyes at me
Whooooa-oh, you cry
And moan and say it will work out
But honey child
I’ve got my doubts
You can’t see the forest
For the trees
Oh, don’t get me wrong
It’s not that I knock it
It’s just that I’m
I’m not in the market
For a boy who wants to love
Only me
Yes and I ain’t sayin’
You ain’t pretty
All I’m sayin’
I’m not ready
For any person
Place or thing
To try and pull the reins
In on me
Soooooo, goodbye
I’ll be leavin’
I see no sense
In this cryin’ and grievin’
We’ll both live a lot longer
If you live without me . . .
After this, my iPod shuffled to “Seether” by Veruca Salt, and trust me, the madness continued.
