1/3 Of U.S. Neither Entitled Nor Qualified To Voice Opinions

Another great one from The Onion.  Whenever I’m down, I can always count on them for at least a little chuckle.  A recent “report” on an opinions study conduct by the same team which “shook the academic world by conclusively proving the existence of both bad ideas during brainstorming and dumb questions during question-and-answer sessions,” discovered the following:

“On topics from evolution to the environment to gay marriage to immigration reform, we found that many of the opinions expressed were so off-base and ill-informed that they actually hurt society by being voiced,” said chief researcher Professor Mark Fultz, who based the findings on hundreds of telephone, office, and dinner-party conversations compiled over a three-year period. “While people have long asserted that it takes all kinds, our research shows that American society currently has a drastic oversupply of the kinds who don’t have any good or worthwhile thoughts whatsoever. We could actually do just fine without them.”

ROTFLOL! I think I might post that inside my gradebook for my own personal amusement. :)

Gold Bullion

My debt has reached an outragous level today.  Unspeakable, really.  It is laughable to me that just a little while ago I was considering buying gold bullion as an investment.  As the last press release from Monex made clear, buying “gold has been recognized for centuries as one of the best ways to preserve one’s wealth and purchasing power . . . In all ages, man has been fascinated with the beauty and magic of gold, and with its power to change men’s lives.”  Boy, I could certainly change my life if some of that magic would come my way!  Especially because I’m still waiting on back pay from work, and earning credit card interest all the while.  Apparently I can’t pay my bills with the sweetness and light of my smile . . . :)

The Cicada Menace

Ok, so I’ve been waiting for over a week for the little green devils to pop out of the ground and start grossing me out. I still remember the spring of 1990, when the last brood covered my entire school yard, until one day they all died and littered the asphalt with their crunchy little corpses. It is impossible to describe the smell, which is unbelievable in coming from dead insects. Ugh. They’re supposed to spring forth in May, so they should come sometime this week. I think, besides the fact they’re six legged flying uglies, the true reason they disconcert me so much is the very nature of their life cycle — they spend 17 years buried in dirt, only to emerge into the sun for a brief and brutal time. If they can beat the odds and avoid being eaten like a Thanksgiving dinner by the various birds, wasps, and spiders that relish them, they get to spend 4 weeks reproducing before their lives end. Too much mortality for me, I think.

Proof & Consequences

When presented with irrefutable evidence that someone you are required to love is a lying, selfish, cheating, sociopath, what can you really do? Does one thrust it under their nose and demand an explanation? Simply say “enough is enough” and write them off the books? Take the passive aggressive approach and wait for them to admit what they’ve done wrong? Or does one simply sit back, let it go, and hope to achieve a state of peace and forgiveness?  I understand why people lie about things like money, responsibility, and sex.  I just don’t understand why they would lie to me.
