Denver Magazine

Denver Magazine recently issued a web releae announcing it will be launching its new website in June 2007, which they believe “will be the most advanced informational site and area guide in Colorado.”  Looking at their placeholder page, I can’t say that I have a substantial amount of confidence in their claims.  While having recent news headlines is a nice touch from the standard “under construction” message and graphic that most sites would present, why aren’t the news headlines linked to the stories?  And I absolutely hate when sites don’t tell you when they’ll be back — that’s simple etiquette.  When they launch in June, they plan to provide users with “information on virtually anything in Denver and surrounding areas,” including restaurant reviews and real estate details, so that “Denver Magazine will be your one stop shop for anything regarding the great city of Denver.”  I hope that its as informative as they say, and I look forward to checking it out again in June.

Pyroteachnic

I have come to the sad conclusion that I need to change the template for my online teaching portfolio, Pyroteachnic.  While I love the flame motif and the script, I think it might be hard to read for some people and it is definitely not Section 503c compliant.  I’d planned to do two almost complete code sets to address this, but I’m never going to get around to it.  Heck, I haven’t even been able to update it since the winter, which is just hugely disappointing to me personally.  It will have to go on the AF/BSS (after finals but before summer school) list of to-dos.  So, if anyone knows of an appropriate WordPress theme that uses accessibility standards, please let me know!

Book Art

I love books.  They are the way, the truth, and the light — No Joke.  This obsession is a little strange as I get almost all my information online and rarely look at my books except for fond memories or when I can’t find the equivalent information or text in a digital format.  But my personal library is quite substantial, although I once sold a bunch under the prompting of a boyfriend who was tired of stepping over them, a decision I still very much resent to this day.  I don’t believe that books should be locked up or put away, but rather should be open and accessible to anyone who visits my home, nor do I believe that books need to be handled with archivist precision, although I do have a thing about deliberately damaging texts.  I recently discovered this site of Book Art which is just amazing.  I guess if you are going to cut up works of literature, its a little more okay if its to make it a work of art . . . Check out the personal catalogue of Georgia Russell to see her amazing work, including the one below, which is entitled Memoire.  She’s Scottish, which is a bonus.  :)

VoIP

I have got to do something about my phone bill.  I originally set up my office line to deal with the issues of managing one particular project which I’m no longer involved with.  Now I feel like I don’t even need it as most of my calling gets done through my mobile.

If my small business was a little less small (read: more than one person), I know for sure I would go with one of Xpander Communications Voice over IP solutions, which I discovered in a recent web release.  These VoIP Small Business Phone Systems drastically reduce costs by providing unlimited free service & support along with improved long distance and international calling plans.  Since most of the people in the main company that contracts my services are scattered across the country, my life would be simplified if they used this kind of system, as they could just issue me an extension that could lead to my personal line, which I imagine I should be able to forward to my cell.  Until then, I guess I just keep paying for covereage I don’t actually need.  ;)

Cute Animation

I’ve always wished I could do animations — but my artistic skill, even when computer assisted, is absolutely tragic.  That’s why I always admire creative work like this flash animation by dustball.  It’s like Blue Man Group meets intramural sports in the land of black & white.  It must have taken ages to do, at least as far as I can tell, although flash isn’t one of my AOEs.  I can’t wait to show this to Fraser as he’s bound to shimmy & dance a long.  He does this cute little shake that is very White Man Dancing, but is still better than anything I could ever do . . . :)   He wants to learn karate, but I wonder if he’d settle for dance? Hmmmm . . .
