I’m a Scot by heritage, an American by birth. I don’t have a complete understanding of the politics of my homeland, so I was somewhat surprised to see a New York Times article on how Scottish Nationalists recently upset the Labor Party in the mid-term elections. As you can probably guess, this party’s unifying goal is independence from Britain. I guess surprised isn’t the right word, as one of the things you can’t help but notice in that country is a deep and abiding bitterness to the folks south of the border, but Labor always wins. Apparently, the results in Wales were similar, which makes this a potentially interesting time in UK politics. I will be curious to see how this affects the situation in Ireland . . .

If you’re looking for the best florists New York has to offer, you might want to check into Booth Flower Shop. Their new website design isn’t bad, with great pictures and an easy check out process, although I’m pretty sure they took some ‘inspiration’ from another site I worked with. Booth Flower Shop offers both FTD and Teleflora, and guarantees satisfaction with every purchase, which is hugely important when ordering flowers. Right now they’re undergoing an expansion, not just by redesigning their website to be more consumer friendly, but also by acquiring another floral shop in the city, which I imagine will allow them to better serve a wider area of New York. Currently, Booth Flower Shop is offering 10% off their Mother’s Day Flowers, so if your mum lives in NY you might want to check them out soon.

I had another great day teaching my Junior Achievement class. This is a volunteer activity that I can’t recommend enough — the activities are really engaging, and the kids seem really interested in hearing about my “real life” business knowledge (I know, I know!) — and anyone who has an interest in helping secure our nation’s economic future would find it a fulfilling experience.

Tonight I’m going to ditch out on all the work I’ve got for school, and head over to Val’s for movie night. I think this might shape up to be a nice tradition for us to start, as it’s pretty rare for me to hang out with both her and Fraser at the same time. I keep thinking about how I won’t be here much longer (mid-summer I have to move to Milwaukee for school), and how much I’m going to miss my Bubba, so I will be trying to make the most of the time I have left . . .

The Virgin Islands are one of the locations I’m considering for my tropical vacation. I keep thinking it would be nice if I actually knew someone who owned a home in one of these locals, and in my dreams it would be a beautiful place, close to the beach, fully stocked, and appropriately staffed. I suppose some day, when they begin paying teachers the millions of dollars they deserve, I might be able to buy some property myself (Ha!). Of course, like all major investments or purchases, I would be terrified to go it alone.
I recently saw a web release for Century 21 Sauter & Associates, who deal with St Thomas real estate and homes on the other Virgin Islands, too. The leading real estate agents for this region, they claim to: “do more than guide you through the maze of real estate forms and financing,” but to “also serve as your expert source for information on local schools, Churches, shopping, entertainment, traffic patterns and routes.” They also will help you “find everything you need – from building services and landscaping to kitchen design and interior decorating – to turn the perfect house into a comfortable home” and to “help familiarize you with the customs and traditions that make the Virgin Islands a wonderfully unique place to call home.”
Sounds good, if you have the cash . . .
