I hate cities. They’re dirty (even the clean ones), noisy, and even just stepping out to the curb for a smoke can send me in to spasms of social anxiety. But Austin is different. So . . . congenial, without being falsely intimate. You almost forget that you’re in Texas. I could live here quite happily, which is more than I can say for the other cities I’ve visited — New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and of course Chicago and Milwaukee.
